A topcoat is lighter — typically 350–450g — intended for transitional weather and travel rather than deep winter. Fabric Choices for Overcoats

The fabric choice for an overcoat is as important as for a suit, and the options are similarly distinguished. Cashmere overcoatings from Loro Piana and Holland & Sherry represent the peak of luxury — extraordinarily warm, beautiful in drape and available in classic camel, charcoal, navy and ivory. Melton wool — a tightly milled, smooth-faced heavyweight wool — is the traditional choice for Chesterfield overcoats; its clean, smooth surface gives the coat a formal, sculptural quality. Fleece and flannel overcoatings offer warmth and texture at a more accessible price point. Camel hair cloth is a classic choice for a relaxed polo coat style, particularly beautiful in its natural undyed camel colour.

Fit and Construction

An overcoat must fit over a suit jacket — the shoulder allowance, chest ease and sleeve width must account for the layers beneath. This is one of the key arguments for bespoke overcoat construction rather than off-the-rack: the overcoat is fitted to the way you actually wear it, over your specific jacket build. At the basted fitting, we ask clients to wear a representative suit jacket so we can check the ease allowances precisely.

Bespoke overcoats at Manhattan Tailors start from HKD 9,000 for a quality wool Chesterfield, rising to HKD 25,000+ for a pure cashmere commission in Loro Piana cloth. Timeline is five to seven weeks for a full bespoke overcoat. Given that a quality overcoat is worn for decades, the cost-per-wear calculation is extraordinarily favourable.
