True Bespoke vs "Bespoke-Labelled" Tailoring

The word "bespoke" has no legal protection in most markets outside the UK. Any tailor can use it. The genuine article involves a hand-drafted unique pattern, a basted fitting on the raw unlined shell and significant handwork in construction. If a tailor offers you a bespoke suit in 24 hours with no fitting, it is made-to-measure at best. Ask directly: "Is this a unique pattern cut from my measurements, or an adjusted block?" A good tailor will explain their process clearly.

What to Look for in Construction Quality

Canvas construction is the defining mark of quality. Inside a bespoke jacket, there should be a floating layer of horsehair and wool canvas stitched to the jacket body — not glued. You can test this by pinching the front of a jacket: in a fused jacket you feel one layer; in a canvassed jacket you can separate the shell from the canvas slightly. Fusing deteriorates over time, causing bubbling. Canvas improves with wear, moulding to your chest.

Look at the buttonholes — machine buttonholes are even and identical; hand-worked buttonholes have a slight organic variation and a richer, thicker edge. Examine the collar — it should roll naturally and sit against the shirt collar without gaping. Check the lining — it should be attached at the hem with a jump hem allowing it to move independently.

Evaluating Experience and Reputation

Seek tailors who have been in business for at least 15–20 years in the same location, who can show you garments they have made and whose staff includes a qualified master cutter — not just a salesperson who takes measurements. Testimonials, repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals are more reliable signals than awards or marketing copy.
