Choosing a fabric for your bespoke suit can feel overwhelming when you are standing in front of walls of cloth. Our master cutters have guided thousands of clients through this process. Here is a structured approach to understanding the mills, fibres and weights that matter most.

The World's Premier Suiting Mills

Dormeuil (France/UK), founded in 1842, produces some of the most prestigious suiting fabrics in the world — their Amadeus, Vanquish II and World Record ranges set the benchmark for superfine wools and exotic blends. Scabal (Belgium) produces similarly iconic fabrics; their Ambassador and Tropical ranges offer exceptional value alongside their legendary Golden Bale collection.

Understanding Wool Grades: Super 100s to Super 200s

The Super number refers to the fineness of the wool fibre measured in microns. Super 100s (17.5 microns) is durable, holds a crease well and suits daily business wear. Super 120s (19.75 microns) is the most popular choice — fine enough to look luxurious, robust enough to last years. Super 150s+ feels incredibly soft but is more delicate, better suited to occasional-wear suits rather than daily rotation.

A common misconception is that higher Super numbers are always better. For a suit worn three times a week, Super 100s–120s is the correct choice. Super 150s+ is best reserved for special occasion garments.

Fabric Weight: Choosing for Climate

Lightweight (220–280g) — ideal for Hong Kong's humid summers, tropical environments and travel. Fresco weaves and open-weave tropicals fall here. Mid-weight (280–330g) — the year-round standard for most business suits; holds structure, drapes beautifully. Heavyweight (330g+) — British tweeds, flannels and overcoatings; best for cooler climates or winter travel.

For Hong Kong-based clients, we typically recommend a lightweight to mid-weight tropical wool. For clients who travel between hemispheres, a 280–300g Super 120s plain weave is the most versatile choice.

Alternatives to Wool: Linen, Cashmere and Blends

Linen is ideal for summer — breathable, characterful and increasingly accepted in business settings. It wrinkles naturally, which is part of its charm. Cashmere blends offer extraordinary softness in a lightweight cloth — excellent for autumn and winter commissions. Mohair blends add a subtle sheen and resist creasing — popular for evening suits and travel wardrobes.
