Bespoke vs Made-to-Measure Suits — Complete Guide

Walk into any tailor shop and you will likely hear both terms. Some retailers use them interchangeably. They are not the same. At Manhattan Tailors Hong Kong, we offer fully bespoke tailoring — a process that is meaningfully different from made-to-measure in almost every respect.

What Bespoke Actually Means

Bespoke originates from Savile Row, where cloth was said to be "bespoken for" a specific client. In traditional tailoring, bespoke means: a unique paper pattern is drafted from scratch for your measurements, cut by hand, assembled with a basted (temporary) fitting, adjusted, then finished by hand. No two bespoke suits share the same pattern — ever.

At our Nathan Road atelier, a master cutter takes 20–25 measurements and uses them to create a pattern that belongs to you alone. This pattern is stored in your file and refined at every fitting. Over time it becomes a precise record of your body that produces a perfect fit across every garment you order.

What Made-to-Measure Actually Means

Made-to-measure (MTM) starts from a pre-existing block pattern — typically one of 20–40 standard sizes — and adjusts it based on your measurements. The alterations are usually made digitally or by a fitter following a standard protocol. The result fits better than off-the-rack but does not achieve the same personalised drape as true bespoke.

MTM is offered by many brand retailers, online services and mid-market tailors. It is a legitimate product — simply a different one. The pattern is not unique to you; it is a modified standard. This matters especially for clients with non-standard proportions: broad shoulders with a narrow waist, a high right shoulder, a military posture, or a full chest. True bespoke corrects all of these; MTM approximates them.

Key Differences: Construction and Fitting

Pattern: Bespoke — unique, hand-drafted. MTM — modified block. Fittings: Bespoke — two to three, including a basted fitting on the raw shell. MTM — usually one, sometimes zero (online). Construction: Bespoke — full canvas, hand-stitched lapels, hand-sewn buttonholes. MTM — often fused or half-canvassed, machine-sewn. Fabric: Bespoke — open to full mill selection. MTM — limited to the shop swatches. Lead time: Bespoke — four to six weeks. MTM — one to three weeks.
