How to Pick the Right Suit for Your Body Type

How to Pick the Right Suit for Your Body Type

At Manhattan Tailors, our master cutters assess each client's proportions individually and make specific recommendations about silhouette, lapel width, button placement and trouser cut to create the most balanced and flattering result. Here is a guide to the key considerations by body type — though our most important advice is always: trust the bespoke process, which addresses your specific proportions directly rather than relying on generalised rules.

Tall and Slim

Tall, slim clients have the closest physique to the classic menswear mannequin — but they still benefit from bespoke. Standard suits are frequently too short in the body and arms for taller clients; off-the-rack often produces a jacket that looks cropped. In bespoke, the correct jacket length and sleeve length are simply part of the specification. To add visual weight and presence: consider wider lapels, double-breasted configurations, patch pockets and horizontal texture (herringbone weaves, subtle checks) rather than vertical stripes. A fuller trouser cut — with a slight taper to the ankle — prevents a spindly appearance.

Shorter and Compact

Shorter clients benefit significantly from bespoke — standard suits are almost always too long in the body, making them look swamped. A shorter jacket, higher trouser rise and careful sleeve length are all adjusted in bespoke as a matter of course. To create the impression of height: opt for single-breasted jackets (which create a longer vertical line), avoid breaks in the silhouette (matching or tonal shirt and tie, no contrasting waistcoat), choose narrower lapels and avoid large pattern cloths that can overwhelm. Slim trouser cuts with a minimal break extend the leg line visually.

Athletic and Broad-Shouldered

Athletic clients — broad shoulders, developed chest, narrower waist — are notoriously difficult to fit off-the-rack because the shoulder and chest sizing puts the waist and torso completely out of proportion. Bespoke is essentially the only solution for a true athletic build. The pattern is cut from scratch to accommodate your shoulder-to-waist differential without the excess fabric in the torso that off-the-rack forces on athletic clients. Style recommendations: suppress the waist to follow your natural silhouette, choose structured shoulders (which work with your natural width rather than adding to it), and slightly wider lapels to balance shoulder breadth.

Fuller Figure

Clients with a fuller figure benefit perhaps more than any other body type from bespoke construction. The myth that tailoring is only for slim bodies is exactly that — a myth. A well-constructed bespoke suit worn by a heavier client looks significantly better than any off-the-rack alternative because the fabric is cut to drape naturally over the actual shape rather than pulling, tightening or billowing where the proportions diverge from standard. Key principles: avoid extreme suppression (which emphasises the waist/hip contrast), use a slightly longer jacket (which elongates the figure), and choose darker, uniform colourways for a slimming effect.

The Truth About Body Type Rules

The guidelines above are starting points, not rules. Our master cutters at Manhattan Tailors have made exceptional suits for every body type imaginable — the rules bend constantly in the presence of a skilled cutter who is assessing your specific proportions in person. The bespoke process exists precisely because bodies do not conform to categories, and neither should the suits that clothe them.
