Bespoke Suits Hong Kong for Expats — What You Need to Know

At Manhattan Tailors, expats make up a significant and valued part of our client base. Whether you have just arrived in Hong Kong or have been here for years, here is everything you need to know about commissioning bespoke suits as an expat — including how to build a wardrobe efficiently, how to ship suits home when you are posted elsewhere and how to continue the relationship remotely.

Why Hong Kong Is Perfect for Expat Tailoring

Hong Kong's combination of world-class tailoring tradition, accessible European fabrics and competitive pricing makes it the best city in the world for expat professionals to build a bespoke wardrobe. You can commission suits that would cost GBP 5,000+ in London for one-third to one-half the price — without sacrificing quality. Many expats arrive with a small collection of off-the-rack suits and leave two years later with a bespoke wardrobe they will never want to replace.

Building Your Wardrobe Over Time

We recommend a phased approach for expats building a wardrobe from scratch. Phase 1 (first six months): two core suits — charcoal and navy — in Super 120s, fully bespoke. This establishes your pattern and gives you coverage for most professional occasions. Phase 2 (months 6–12): a lightweight tropical suit for travel and Hong Kong summers, and a casual blazer. Phase 3: a tuxedo if your lifestyle requires it, and any specialist suits for sport, events or personal preference.

Each suit commissioned after the first improves on the last — your pattern is refined with every fitting, and by the third or fourth commission you have a near-perfect personal block that produces exceptional results every time.

Posting and Relocating

When expat clients are posted elsewhere, we ship directly to their new address. DHL and FedEx deliver our commissions to over 200 countries. For clients who are regularly between cities, we schedule fittings around their Hong Kong visits and can have garments ready for collection within 48 hours for repeat clients whose pattern is established.

Your pattern remains on file at Manhattan Tailors indefinitely. No matter how long you are away, you can commission new suits remotely — updated measurements, new fabric selection, done via email — and receive a garment that fits correctly because your base pattern is already established.

Styles for the International Expat

Expats at Manhattan Tailors often serve clients or attend meetings across multiple cultural contexts — Hong Kong, mainland China, Europe, the Americas. A well-chosen bespoke wardrobe bridges these contexts effortlessly. We recommend neutral, authoritative colours (navy, charcoal, mid-grey) as core workhorses, with more distinctive pieces (bold checks, rich blues, interesting textures) for context-specific use.

Getting Started

If you have recently arrived in Hong Kong, the best time to start is now. The sooner your first commission is placed, the sooner your pattern is established and the sooner the rest of your wardrobe can be built efficiently. Book a consultation at our Nathan Road atelier — walk-ins are welcome, but appointments ensure dedicated time with our master cutter.
