If you are planning a trip to Asia and want a bespoke suit, the choice between Hong Kong and Bangkok comes up regularly. Having served international clients from both regions for nearly three decades, we can offer an honest assessment of both destinations.
Price: Bangkok Looks Cheaper on the Surface
Bangkok tailors typically quote prices from THB 8,000–30,000 (USD 220–850). Hong Kong bespoke starts from HKD 5,000–8,000 (USD 640–1,020). On raw numbers, Bangkok appears cheaper. But what is included in those prices is very different. Most Bangkok tourist tailor shops offer high-volume made-to-measure with limited fittings, fused construction and house-brand fabrics of uncertain provenance. The price reflects this.
Construction Quality
Bangkok's high-volume tailor shops — particularly those catering to tourist foot traffic — predominantly use fused construction and machine-sewn finishing. The suits look reasonable when new but deteriorate faster and lack the drape of canvassed garments. There are skilled independent tailors in Bangkok, but they are harder to identify and less accessible to first-time visitors.
Hong Kong's established bespoke tailors operate within a culture that has maintained high construction standards for decades. Full canvas, hand-stitched buttonholes and multiple fittings are standard at quality houses. The tailoring district infrastructure — access to specialist suppliers, button makers, lining houses — means everything in your suit is of known provenance.
Fabric Access
This is Hong Kong's clearest advantage. Hong Kong is one of the world's most important fabric trading hubs. Manhattan Tailors stocks cloth from Dormeuil, Scabal, Holland & Sherry, Loro Piana and Vitale Barberis Canonico as standard — over 3,000 verified swatches. In Bangkok, the selection at most shops is limited to what the owner has purchased, and provenance of "Italian" or "English" cloth is often unverified.
The Verdict
For budget-first clients who want a presentable suit quickly and are not focused on construction quality or long-term durability, Bangkok offers accessible options. For clients who want genuine bespoke construction, verified European fabrics, multiple fittings and a suit that will last 20 years, Hong Kong is the correct choice — and at Manhattan Tailors, prices remain very competitive with Bangkok's mid-to-premium segment anyway.
