What Is the Canvas Construction?

Full canvas construction uses a floating layer of horsehair and wool hand-stitched to the outer cloth -- it moulds to your body over time and improves with wear. Fused construction bonds an interlining to the cloth with adhesive -- it degrades over time and eventually bubbles and separates. Ask directly: "Is this full canvas construction?"

Who Actually Makes the Garment?

In some tailoring operations, the person who takes your measurements is not the same workshop that makes the garment. At Manhattan Tailors, every garment is made in our Tsim Sha Tsui workshop by our 200+ master artisans.

What Fabrics Are Available?

Premium fabric houses -- Dormeuil, Scabal, Holland and Sherry, Loro Piana -- are the benchmark for genuine quality suiting cloth. A tailor offering only unnamed fabrics at very low prices is likely cutting costs across the board.

What to Watch Out For

The Rush Sell

A tailor who immediately asks how many days you have in Hong Kong and pushes for a same-day decision is prioritising the sale over the commission. A quality tailor will take the time to understand what you need.

Vague Pricing

A tailor who will not give you a clear price before you commit has something to hide. Clear, honest pricing is a mark of a tailor who is confident in their value.

"Bespoke" Language Applied to Made-to-Measure

The word bespoke is not regulated in Hong Kong -- any tailor can use it. What matters is whether the garment is actually made from a pattern drafted to your unique measurements.

Commission Arrangements

Some hotels and tour operators refer clients to specific tailors under commission arrangements. The referral may not be purely based on quality -- do your own research before committing.

What a Good First Consultation Looks Like

At a quality tailor in Hong Kong, a first consultation should involve:
