Scabal Fabric: The Complete Guide to One of Suiting's Most Innovative Cloth Houses

What Is Scabal?

Scabal (an acronym for Société Commerciale Anglo Belgo Allemande de Lainages) was founded in Brussels in 1938 by Max Lerner. The company began as a textile trading firm sourcing premium English wools for the European market, and over eight decades has evolved into one of the most recognisable names in bespoke and premium suiting.

Like Dormeuil, Scabal operates primarily as a merchant and finisher — sourcing the finest yarns from English and Scottish mills, working them into cloth to their own specifications, and distributing the finished fabric to tailors and clothing houses worldwide. This merchant model gives them access to a broad range of raw materials and considerable flexibility in what they produce.

Scabal's Most Notable Collections

  • Scabal Gold: Scabal's most famous innovation — a fabric that literally incorporates gold thread into the weave. First produced in the 1980s, Scabal Gold became a symbol of conspicuous luxury and was famously used in the James Bond film wardrobe. The gold content is genuine, and the fabric commands a significant price premium.
  • Diamond Chip Fabric: Scabal has produced fabrics incorporating actual diamond dust, ground and woven into the cloth. These are collector's items more than practical suiting choices, but they demonstrate Scabal's willingness to push the concept of luxury cloth to its logical extreme.
  • Pura Lana Vergine: Scabal's classic wool range — fine pure new wool in a range of weights, from tropical to winter. This is the workhorse of the Scabal range and what most clients encounter in a tailor's swatch book. Excellent quality, consistent, and available in a wide range of colours and patterns.
  • Performance fabrics: Scabal has invested heavily in technical cloth — fabrics with stretch, moisture management, and crease resistance properties. Their performance range is designed for the modern professional who needs a suit that performs under physical demands without looking like activewear.
  • Cashmere and cashmere blends: Scabal produces high-quality cashmere and cashmere-wool blends for luxury suiting and overcoating. Their cashmere range competes directly with Loro Piana and Dormeuil at the upper end of the market.

Scabal vs Dormeuil — A Direct Comparison

Both Scabal and Dormeuil are Belgian-French cloth merchants with long histories and wide distribution in premium tailoring houses. The differences are primarily of character rather than quality:

  • Innovation: Scabal is more willing to experiment — the gold and diamond fabrics are the extreme examples, but the tendency toward technical innovation runs through their range. Dormeuil is more classically oriented.
  • Classic wools: Both produce excellent classic English wools. Dormeuil's classics — particularly the Amadeus range — have a slightly softer, more French character. Scabal's classics read as slightly crisper and more structured.
  • Price: Both operate at similar price points for comparable quality levels. The exotic Scabal fabrics (gold, diamond) are significantly more expensive than anything Dormeuil produces.
  • Availability: Both are widely available through established bespoke and MTM houses. Manhattan Tailors carries swatch selections from both houses.

Choosing Between Scabal and Dormeuil for a Bespoke Suit

For practical business suiting, the choice between Scabal and Dormeuil often comes down to the specific cloth rather than the house. A tailor experienced with both will show you swatches from each and let the handle, colour, and weight guide the decision rather than brand loyalty.

If you want the classic soft drape associated with traditional English bespoke, Dormeuil tends to be the choice. If you want slightly more structure and are interested in technical or performance properties, Scabal often has more to offer. For anything extraordinary — a wedding suit with a touch of precious material, or a fabric that makes a conversation piece — Scabal's range goes further than anyone else's.
