How to Measure Yourself for a Bespoke Suit at Home

At Manhattan Tailors, we review every set of client measurements personally before cutting begins. Our measurement guide has helped thousands of clients across the world order successfully from home. Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of every key measurement for a bespoke suit.

Before You Measure: Setup and Tools

You will need: a soft fabric tape measure (not a metal builder's tape), a friend to assist and well-fitting trousers and a shirt to measure over — never measure over a suit or thick jumper. Stand in your natural posture — neither slouching nor over-correcting. Take all measurements twice and use the average. Note any specific fit issues with current suits (e.g. "jackets always pull across the upper back" or "trousers always too long in the rise").

Key Jacket Measurements

Chest: Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor and allowing enough room to slide two fingers underneath. Waist: Measure around the natural waist (above the hips, below the ribcage) — this is used for waist suppression. Seat/Hips: Measure around the fullest part of the hips, approximately 20 cm below the natural waist. Shoulder width: Measure from the outer edge of one shoulder to the outer edge of the other, across the back. Sleeve length: From the top of the shoulder seam to the wrist bone, with the arm slightly bent.

Back length: From the prominent vertebra at the base of the neck down to where you want the jacket to end (typically the seat). Jacket length: From the top of the shoulder to the hem — usually to mid-knuckle when your arm hangs naturally.

Key Trouser Measurements

Waist: Around the natural waist where the trouser band will sit. Seat: Around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks. Thigh: Around the fullest part of the thigh. Inseam: From the crotch down to the ankle bone. Outseam: From the natural waist to the floor (or desired hem length). Rise: From the natural waist to the crotch — essential for comfort and can be front and back separately.

Photographs Alongside Measurements

Send photos of yourself wearing a well-fitted shirt and trousers — front, side and back views in natural light. Photos help our master cutter identify posture patterns that measurements alone cannot capture: a forward head posture, uneven shoulder height, a sway back, or a significant difference between left and right sides. These are corrected in the pattern draft before a single piece of cloth is cut.

When Measurements Are Not Enough

For clients with significant posture variations or fit challenges — or for wedding suits and other high-priority commissions — we strongly recommend either visiting our atelier in person or using our postal basted-fitting service. No photograph or measurement set fully replaces a trained tailor's eye and hands on the actual garment.

Send us your measurements and we will respond with a personal quote and any follow-up questions our master cutter needs before cutting begins.
