Off-the-rack shirts are made to a standard size that corresponds approximately to neck circumference and sleeve length -- and nothing else. Your actual body dimensions -- chest, shoulders, waist, arm circumference, back length -- are not accounted for.
A bespoke dress shirt at Manhattan Tailors begins with 15+ precise measurements. The pattern is drafted from scratch -- not adjusted from a standard block. Once you have worn a shirt made to your actual measurements, it becomes difficult to go back.
Collar Styles -- The Most Visible Choice

Spread Collar
The most versatile and widely worn collar style. Works with or without a tie, suits most face shapes, and is appropriate across business formal and smart casual occasions.
Cutaway Collar
An extreme spread where the collar points angle outward almost horizontally. Very contemporary in appearance, works best with a full Windsor knot. Popular in Italian suiting culture.
Button-Down Collar
The collar points fasten to the shirt front with small buttons. Works best without a tie and pairs naturally with Oxford and end-on-end fabrics. Not appropriate for very formal business or black-tie contexts.
Tab and Pin Collar
A tab or pin draws the collar points together behind the tie knot, lifting and centring it for a very neat, elevated appearance. Classic and understated -- a favourite for formal business contexts.
Wing Collar
The formal collar for black-tie. Worn exclusively with a French cuff dress shirt and tuxedo.

Single (Button) Cuff
The most practical everyday cuff -- fastened with one or two buttons. Works across all occasions, easy to roll up, appropriate in any business or smart casual context.
French (Double) Cuff

Cocktail Cuff
A hybrid between single and French -- squared and extended, fastened with buttons rather than cufflinks. Works well in business and smart-casual contexts.

Cotton Poplin
The standard for business dress shirts. Fine, smooth, takes a press well. Available in white, ivory, and a wide range of colours and fine stripes.
Oxford Cloth
A heavier basketweave cotton with a more textured surface. More casual -- appropriate for button-down collar shirts and smart casual contexts.
End-on-End
An alternating weave producing a subtle texture and slightly softer look than poplin. Very versatile -- appropriate for business and smart casual. Particularly effective in pale blue and grey.
Twill
A diagonal weave producing a softer hand than poplin with excellent drape. A good choice for formal business shirts where poplin feels too stark.
Sea Island and Egyptian Cotton
The finest available cotton fabrics -- exceptionally soft with a natural sheen. Available in our premium fabric selection alongside cloths from leading luxury houses.
Fit and Personalisation
A bespoke shirt commission allows you to determine fit, placket style, button material, back style, and monogramming on the cuff, chest, or collar.

Once your pattern is on file, repeat orders can be placed remotely at any time with worldwide shipping. Many clients commission an initial consultation in Hong Kong then order two to three shirts per year online without returning.
