At Manhattan Tailors, our bespoke shirt service operates to the same standard as our suiting — precise measurements, quality cloth, multiple style options and the kind of personalised attention that produces a shirt perfectly calibrated to the wearer. Here is a complete guide to commissioning custom shirts in Hong Kong.
Why Bespoke Shirts?
The neck, collar and cuff of a shirt are what the world sees most clearly — and they are the measurements most poorly served by standard sizing. A collar that gaps, a sleeve that is too long or too short, a body that billows around the waist — these are the daily compromises of off-the-rack shirting. A bespoke shirt eliminates all of them. Your collar sits perfectly against the neck, your sleeves end exactly where they should and the body is shaped to your torso rather than a generic template. The difference, once experienced, is impossible to go back from.
Shirt Fabrics: Poplin, Twill, Oxford and More
We stock an extensive range of shirting fabrics from the world's finest mills — Thomas Mason, Alumo, Canclini and Monti among them. Cotton poplin is the classic choice: smooth, formal and versatile — ideal for business shirts worn under a suit. Oxford weave is more textured and casual — a smart-casual shirt par excellence. Twill has a diagonal weave structure that adds a subtle sheen and exceptional softness — a step up from poplin for dressier occasions. End-on-end (chambray) provides a slight texture and visual interest that works well for business shirts in blue, grey and white.
We also carry luxury shirting options: 200-thread-count Swiss cotton, Alumo voile for summer, Thomas Mason's Gold Line for special occasion shirts, and a range of formal shirting fabrics for dress and evening shirts.
Collar Styles
The collar is the signature element of any shirt. Popular choices include: spread collar (the most versatile business option, works with or without a tie), semi-spread (slightly narrower, more traditional), button-down (smart-casual, American prep heritage), pin collar (formal, adds a horizontal lift to the tie knot), cutaway collar (very spread, contemporary and fashionable) and band collar (collarless — increasingly popular for casual occasions and contemporary styling). We discuss your typical wearing context and recommend accordingly.
Cuff Styles and Personalisation
Cuff options include: single (barrel) cuff with buttons for everyday business, double (French) cuff for cufflinks — the most formal choice, and convertible cuff that works as either. We can add a personalised monogram to cuffs, collar stands or inside the placket — a detail that makes each shirt unmistakably yours.
Pricing and Minimum Order
Custom shirts at Manhattan Tailors start from HKD 800–1,200 each depending on fabric choice, with discounts for orders of three or more shirts. Most clients commission shirts alongside a suit order; your shirt measurements are taken at the same appointment. Timeline is two to three weeks for shirts.
