Before comparing USA vs Hong Kong pricing, it helps to be clear about what we are comparing. The word "bespoke" is used loosely in the American market — it is applied to everything from genuinely hand-cut, full canvas suits made from a unique pattern to off-the-rack suits with minor alterations marketed as "custom." The price differences below assume we are talking about the same thing: a genuine bespoke suit with a pattern drafted from scratch, hand-cut cloth, full canvas construction, and at least two fittings.
If you are comparing a genuine bespoke suit to a made-to-measure or "custom" suit using adjusted block patterns, the categories are not equivalent — and the price comparison will be misleading.
Bespoke Suit Costs in the USA — By City
New York City
New York has the highest bespoke tailoring prices in the United States, driven by Midtown retail rents, high labour costs, and a concentrated luxury market. Entry-level genuine bespoke from an established Manhattan house typically starts around USD 3,500–5,000 for a single suit in a standard fabric. Better-known houses with longer wait lists and more experienced cutters charge USD 6,000–12,000 or more. Fabric is usually additional.
Made-to-measure operations in New York — which are often marketed as bespoke — typically run USD 800–2,500. These use adjusted standard patterns and are not equivalent to genuine bespoke. Hong Kong bespoke tailoring prices vary significantly depending on the house, the fabric chosen, and the number of garments ordered. At Manhattan Tailors, our pricing reflects genuine bespoke construction — unique pattern, hand-cut cloth, full canvas build, and a minimum of two fittings.
For US clients ordering through our trunk show programme, the pricing is the same as for in-store Hong Kong clients. The garment is made in Hong Kong and shipped to your US address. There are no additional "trunk show fees."
As a general guide for fabric selection: entry-level premium fabrics from Dormeuil or Scabal represent the mid-range. Finer counts and Loro Piana cashmere and vicuna represent the upper end. Our tailors will walk through the full range at your fitting appointment.

The cost difference between Hong Kong and US bespoke tailoring is not a quality difference — it is a structural difference in cost base. Several factors explain why Hong Kong produces competitive pricing:
Workshop costs: Our master artisans work in a Hong Kong workshop rather than a Manhattan retail environment. The difference in real estate, labour overhead, and operating costs is substantial — and that difference is reflected in our pricing rather than absorbed as margin.
No middlemen: We source fabric directly from mills and cut and sew in-house. There are no wholesale markups, agent commissions, or retail distribution costs built into our pricing.
Volume and specialisation: Our 200+ master artisans produce exclusively bespoke garments at significant volume. Specialisation at scale produces efficiencies that a small New York atelier with two tailors cannot match.

The Real Comparison — What to Ask

Is the pattern drafted from scratch? Genuine bespoke begins with a new pattern for every client. Made-to-measure adjusts a standard block. Ask directly.
What is the canvas construction? Full canvas, half canvas, or fused? The answer determines how the jacket drapes and how long it lasts. Full canvas is the standard for genuine bespoke.
How many fittings are included? Genuine bespoke requires at least two — a structural fitting and a finishing fitting. Single-fitting operations are not delivering traditional bespoke.
Who cuts the pattern? At Manhattan Tailors, every pattern is hand-cut by a trained master tailor. Knowing who actually makes the garment — not just who takes your measurements — is important.
